The On/Off Internal O-ring is the rubber sealing ring inside the on/off valve assembly on the spa shell rim. The on/off valve is the smaller rotating valve that turns the airflow to a jet group fully on or fully off (as opposed to the air control, which adjusts how much). The O-ring sits inside the valve mechanism and seals the rotating shaft against water leaking up around it.
When to replace: Replace the O-ring any time water weeps from around the on/off valve when the jets are running, the valve feels stiff or sticky to turn, or you're already opening the valve assembly for service. On/off valves work harder than air controls (they go fully open and fully closed every cycle, with more torque), so the internal O-rings tend to wear out faster than air-control O-rings on the same spa.
How to install: No need to drain the spa unless you're disassembling the entire valve. Unscrew the cap, slide the internal mechanism out, remove the old O-ring, clean the groove with a paper towel, lightly lubricate the new O-ring with plumbing-safe silicone lubricant, seat it cleanly, and re-assemble.
Quick tips:
- Replace the O-ring on every on/off valve at once if you have multiple — they age at the same rate and you'd rather not be back here in a few months
- If the valve action is sticky and an O-ring replacement plus silicone lubricant doesn't fix it, the underlying valve internal is worn and needs replacement — not just the O-ring
- Bring the old O-ring to one of our three Ontario showrooms if you're not sure it's the right size for your valve style
